Rainwater appeared before a Pleasanton magistrate five times since his arrest in mid-June. At each hearing, court officials requested a continuance before entering his plea.
Frustrated by the numerous delays, family and friends of the victim expressed their dissatisfaction. During an arraignment attempt in early September, a friend of the victim left the courtroom saying “another wasted day.” The judge reprimanded her for her outburst.
Cassetteri’s family has declined to comment about the case. Her supporters are easily identifiable in court by their shirts depicting a large picture of Cassetteri on the front.
Authorities suspected Rainwater after reviewing Cassetteri’s cell phone records that showed several calls were made after her death, said Edwin Adams Jr., a friend of the victim.
