Last night's event followed similar moves at other campuses to support their international clientele, including the University of Southern Queensland's international friendship program, which linked new students with local people.
Like its counterparts in Sydney, the University of New England in Armidale, NSW, last week rolled out the welcome mat for 50 of its new overseas recruits.
"The local council and UNE felt we needed to make a more formal recognition of the students," UNE international services officer Ashleigh Dempster said. Although UNE's international population made up 10 per cent of its students, "it's meant a lot to the students to feel they were part of the community, not just the university but the wider community".
"There is a growing appreciation of how important international students are to Australia and Australian education, and that these people don't just come here and are left on their own and bugger off again," he said.
