But he also used the media setting to talk about a wide range of issues in his life, from designing courses in Asia and eastern Europe to his friendship with Arnold Palmer to the ills of modern golf equipment.
"The golf ball is so high-tech. ... I can't keep a golf ball in the air anymore," said Nicklaus, 67, the longtime North Palm Beach resident.
Nicklaus, who spoke for more than 30 minutes Friday, railed against golf manufacturers for tailoring its equipment for power and making many of our country's courses obsolete for top players.
Nicklaus said he only plays golf "once or twice a month now," but said he played at Augusta National the previous two days. He was appalled by the length of the professional tees - next month's Masters will play at 7,445 yards, the longest the course has ever been.
